The debug functionality in Microsoft ER tools allows users to view values assigned to format nodes, format mapping nodes, and navigate mapping data sources.
The mapping feature in the designer form can be accessed by clicking the 'Start Debugging' button, with mapping data sources on the left and data to be fetched on the right.
When retrieving data, users must go step by step, starting from the top, unless it's a record, and select the number of records for lists highlighted in red.
While the debugging functionality is useful for navigating between tables, it may sometimes fail without a clear reason, resulting in errors like 'Error while evaluating expression for path *'.
The format also offers debugging functionality, allowing users to debug both the format and format mapping, with lists where the number of records needs to be selected highlighted in red.
Formats integrated with print management cannot be debugged during design, but can be debugged during execution by enabling data debugging at format run in the reporting configuration.
By enabling data debugging at format run, users can debug the mapping, format mapping, and format during execution of an ER.
