- The identity rules for extensions in the AppSource marketplace have been unclear for many partners.
- Some partners have apps with specific id, name, publisher, and version that they may want to change due to rebranding or company acquisitions.
- The past wrong branding of an app will not impact future app branding.
- Dynamics 365 Business Central 2021 Wave 2 release changed the app identity to only include id and version, making name and publisher optional for readability purposes.
- Changes to name or publisher in the app.json file no longer require a breaking change, but the version parameter must be incremented accordingly.
- Changing the publisher or name in the app.json file and publishing a new version will update the app without causing breaking changes.
- For apps published in the Global scope, id and version identify a unique application package, while for Tenant scope apps, the tenant ID is also used for identification.
- Moving from PTE to AppSource requires maintaining the same id and only incrementing the version to prevent issues.
